Warrington trading standards warning over fake goods

TRADING standards bosses are warning Christmas shoppers to beware of deals that look too good to be true.

Officers at Warrington Borough Council say they they are aware of hundreds of websites operating in the run up to Christmas Day claiming they are selling genuine GHD Stylers, cosmetics and Ugg Boots.

They say they have also had complaints about fake items injuring shoppers.

Clr David Keane, executive member for public protection, says trading standards is receiving a large number of complaints from Warrington shoppers about unsafe and fake goods sold on the internet.

He added: “Consumers are continually on the lookout for bargains. However, caution should be applied.

“They should be wary as many of the counterfeit websites also sell the fake items at similar prices to the originals, leading them to believe they must be genuine when often they are not. A simple rule of thumb is that if you find a deal online or elsewhere that looks too good to be true, then it probably is.”

The problem with many of the counterfeit websites is that they are often registered outside the UK, usually in China, which means people cannot get a refund.

More worryingly, with the fake GHD Stylers, they do not meet safety guidelines and can injure people.

Officers are warning people to check items are safe before they buy them, whether online or from a shop.

Clr Keane added: “In the run up to Christmas and afterwards we experience increased volumes of complaints relating to the supply of counterfeit and potentially unsafe consumer goods.

“We have been notified of instances where such items have exploded, causing damage to property and individuals.

“I would advise that consumers buy branded chargers and hair straighteners from reputable stores and traders. These goods should have the CE marking present on the packaging and/or the item, in addition to the name or logo of the manufacturer.”
