Design My Style gives teen girls product power

Inspired by three daughters, years of amazing experiences and invaluable relationships, DAAP graduate Kristine Sturgeon has set out to break down the culture of average for teen girls.

Sturgeon’s startup, Define My Style, is a Web-based application that engages girls 13-19 years old in the design, sharing, advertising and purchasing of handbags. It allows young women to hone their creative skills while teaching them pertinent business lessons.

“Define My Style is a healthy rebellion against mainstream sameness for young girls,” Sturgeon says. “Young girls should be curious, confident and have a strong voice. We’re building a platform for this with DMS based around everything I want for my own daughters.”

CincyTech just announced it is leading a $690,000 seed-stage round in DMS with an investment of $250,000. DMS also received $100,000 from the Queen City Angels and $140,000 from Tech Coast Angels in Los Angeles. The remaining balance came from private individual investors. Born in Tipp City, Ohio, Sturgeon moved to Cincinnati to study architecture at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP). Sturgeon credits her education there for giving her both business and creative abilities and sensibilities.

Graduating in ’96 with a bachelor’s of architecture, Sturgeon has spent the better part of the last 15 years working in strategic marketing and communications out of Chicago. Her experience in creating customer value, mutually beneficial relationships and learning what consumers need and want has given her a great understanding of both the business process and consumer desires.

The idea for DMS came to Sturgeon in autumn 2007, when her oldest daughter was getting ready to head back to school. Unable to decide on a school bag that gave her the functions she needed and was a design she loved, Sturgeon’s daughter was at a standstill. She knew exactly what she wanted out of a product – as most consumers do – but brands sold commercially weren’t interested in listening to her desires. Sturgeon saw a business opportunity.

With a sketchbook and a PowerPoint, Sturgeon created the first DMS beta and tested it with 23 overachieving, involved, young girls. The test group included the daughters of powerful U.S. executives, two girls from China, two from London and one from Italy.

It was evident the beta was a success when Sturgeon began hearing stories of how her product had inspired the young girls to be confident in the identity and designs.

From that point forward, Sturgeon spent nights and weekends developing the web application, investing more than $320,000 of her own money into the company. Today, the DMS site has nearly reached 50,000 members and recently launched a new product line – laptop sleeves and cases.

DMS is one of the first companies to establish the trend of individual branding with consumers wanting increasingly more control of their purchases in everything from handbags and shoes to cars and homes, says Sturgeon.

Festive warning as fakes worth £200k seized at airport

Fake goods worth around  £200,000 have been seized at Stansted Airport in the lead up to Christmas.

Festive shoppers are being warned to be careful about what they buy at Christmas by UK Border Agency officers following the seizures in recent months.

Nearly 1,800 pairs of fake Ugg boots have been detected at Stansted Airport – worth about £170,000 – since September, and in November, more than 200 pairs of bogus Dr Dre headphones, with a total value of £30,000, were seized.

Other forgeries found by agency staff included GHD hair straighteners, iPhones and designer clothing.

Phillip Holliday, UK Border Agency regional director covering Stansted, said: “Cheap counterfeits undercut honest traders and leave shoppers with goods that are at best inferior to genuine products and, at worst, harmful or unsafe.

“We are uncovering all sorts of fake goods, from beauty products to children’s toys, and we’re warning people to be particularly wary of buying cheap items online or from unofficial traders.

“It’s easy to be tricked into thinking you’re getting a bargain, but in the run-up to Christmas our message is that if something appears too good to be true, it probably is.”

After suspected counterfeit goods are detained by the agency, officers approach the rights holders to verify the products are fakes. The rights holder then decides whether to bring a private prosecution against the importer and after this, goods can be destroyed.

The Trading Standards Institute also said counterfeit goods may pose a potential health hazard.

Its chief executive, Ron Gainsford, said: “Trading standards are working hard with other authorities to stop criminals ruining consumers’ festive spirit as millions of low-quality and potentially dangerous counterfeit products are flooding the country in time for Christmas, particularly in markets, car boot sales and online.

“The external appearance and packaging of electrical goods such as chargers and hair straighteners may be copied fairly well, but the internal composition and materials are likely to be substandard and could make the item very dangerous.

“Toys, jewellery, alcohol and cigarettes might look the part but could turn out to be toxic.”

They had great sneakers, hats, gloves, and everything that would be fitting for winter time at a great price. Department stores like Walmart, Target, JC Penney, also have great finds for a budget. They have a lot of variety and selection. When finding gifts, they all have watches, hats, gloves, cologne, shoes, or anything else a man would want.

Immigration minister Damian Green said: "We are dealing with a huge criminal business. The international trade in counterfeit goods is serious organised crime and, for the gangs behind it, it is low-risk and high-reward. Intellectual property crime is a serious economic threat, and it's estimated to be worth around £1.3 billion in the UK each year."

The minister continued: "That's why we have UK Border Agency officers operating 24 hours a day at ports, airports and mail sorting centres and they have seized thousands of counterfeit items that could otherwise have ended up as gifts this Christmas."

Warrington trading standards warning over fake goods

TRADING standards bosses are warning Christmas shoppers to beware of deals that look too good to be true.

Officers at Warrington Borough Council say they they are aware of hundreds of websites operating in the run up to Christmas Day claiming they are selling genuine GHD Stylers, cosmetics and Ugg Boots.

They say they have also had complaints about fake items injuring shoppers.

Clr David Keane, executive member for public protection, says trading standards is receiving a large number of complaints from Warrington shoppers about unsafe and fake goods sold on the internet.

He added: “Consumers are continually on the lookout for bargains. However, caution should be applied.

“They should be wary as many of the counterfeit websites also sell the fake items at similar prices to the originals, leading them to believe they must be genuine when often they are not. A simple rule of thumb is that if you find a deal online or elsewhere that looks too good to be true, then it probably is.”

The problem with many of the counterfeit websites is that they are often registered outside the UK, usually in China, which means people cannot get a refund.

More worryingly, with the fake GHD Stylers, they do not meet safety guidelines and can injure people.

Officers are warning people to check items are safe before they buy them, whether online or from a shop.

Clr Keane added: “In the run up to Christmas and afterwards we experience increased volumes of complaints relating to the supply of counterfeit and potentially unsafe consumer goods.

“We have been notified of instances where such items have exploded, causing damage to property and individuals.

“I would advise that consumers buy branded chargers and hair straighteners from reputable stores and traders. These goods should have the CE marking present on the packaging and/or the item, in addition to the name or logo of the manufacturer.”

In the past few days alone, the Heathrow team has stopped two consignments of fake Dr Dre headphones, which retail at £250 and are one of this year’s must-buy presents for designer-crazy teenagers — a haul with a street value of more than £38,000.

But this is small fry compared with some of the other recent seizures. Fake goods have been flooding into all the major airports and ports in the lead-up to December 25.

One of the biggest hauls was found at Southampton docks — 45,000 pairs of fake UGG boots, the largest such seizure in Europe with a street value of several million pounds.

Staff at the port of Dover, meanwhile, rumbled a consignment of fake toys back in October — all purporting to be top-selling brands such as Disney, Hello Kitty and Thomas the Tank Engine. They were worth £50,000.

The team at Heathrow has also been far busier than last year, when they uncovered 5.9 million items in 22,125 seizures. The total value of goods seized in the past 12 months already exceeds 2010’s figure of £10 million.
